When you first bring your new Goldendoodle (Irishdoodle/Bernedoodle) puppy home, it can take a few days or weeks before your puppy completely adjusts. The experience can be stressful at first since they have left their mama, all of their littermates, and the only environment they have ever known. That would be a lot for anyone! But don’t let that worry you, puppies are also very adaptable and with a lot of love, attention, patience and a little time, they will adjust sooner than you think! This blog will explain a few common sources of stress for puppies and how best to help them!
New Environments
We have already discussed their first experience with moving to a brand new environment. When a puppy moves to a new home or is in unfamiliar surroundings, it can be overwhelming for a puppy. The sights, sounds, and smells will be different from what they’re used to. As they are adjusting to their new environment, it will help if you give them a lots of attention, pets, and love! It’s also important to establish a routine so that they can understand what to expect.
SOCIALIZATION
The impact of socialization cannot be overstated. Puppies need proper socialization to feel comfortable around people and other animals. A lack of exposure to different situations can lead to fear and anxiety. Take your puppy out and about with you, let your Goldendoodle (Irishdoodle/Bernedoodle) meet a variety of people!
LOUD NOISES
Some puppies can be startled or scared of sudden loud noises, such as thunder, fireworks, or construction sound. If you remain calm and unbothered, your puppy may realize they are safe. Give them lots of cuddles and patience if they are stressed by these sounds.
SEPARATION ANXIETY
When your Goldendoodle first comes home at 8 weeks old, they should not be left alone in a crate for any more than one hour. Please do not think that your puppy will be fine if left alone all day. Puppies cannot hold their bladder any longer than one hour. They are also not emotionally ready to be left alone for long periods of time. They are a baby! They need a lot of attention, love, and training. If they are left for longer, you can be sure that they will develop separation anxiety. As they get older, the amount of time that they can be left will increase, but Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles, and Irishdoodles are people oriented and will not be happy being left alone all day. All dogs need exercise, attention and training!
Changes IN Routine
Goldendoodle, Bernedoodle, and Irishdoodle puppies thrive on structure and routine. They especially need routine in the first several months. If there are disruptions in their daily routine, such as a change in their feeding times, exercise schedules or sleeping schedule can lead to stress.
Health Issues
Illness or discomfort can make a puppy feel stressed. If a puppy is not feeling well, they may show signs of anxiety or restlessness. If you suspect your puppy is sick, please make sure you take them to the vet immediately.
Training and Discipline
Your Goldendoodle, Irishdoodle, or Bernedoodle may feel stress if training methods are inconsistent or if they are punished harshly. It is so important to begin basic obedience training right away. Puppies will be happier and more confident when they know what is expected of them. Positive reinforcement is essential for healthy development. There are many books and videos out there to show you how to teach your goldendoodle basic commands. When your puppy has completed their puppy vaccinations, we highly recommend training through an obedience class or a private training class. This investment will benefit both you and your pup!
Overstimulation
Puppies love to play, but too much excitement from play or continuous interaction can overwhelm a puppy. This can lead them to seek quiet time to decompress. If they do, let them rest and get the sleep they need! Puppies can also misbehave if they are overtired or overstimulated. Make sure they are getting the rest that they need.
Learn to recognize the signs of stress in your goldendoodle puppy. If you see signs such as excessive barking, hiding, trembling, or changes in appetite, it is very important not to ignore these signs, but to address them! The best things you can give your goldendoodle puppy are a calm environment, consistent routines, and positive experiences and rewards. This can help reduce stress and develop a happy, healthy doodle!
