Why do Bernedoodles follow you everywhere? If you’ve ever brought a Bernedoodle into your life, you probably know this feeling. You get up to grab a glass of water, and there’s a fluffy shadow right behind you. You head to the laundry room, and they’re there too. Even a quick trip to the bathroom can turn into a small group outing.
At Morning Glory Doodles, we hear this from our puppy families all the time. Honestly, we see it every day at home, too. I’m no scientist, but I’d love to share what I’ve noticed about why Bernedoodles like to stay so close.
It Starts With Their Roots
Bernedoodles are a mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, and both breeds bring something special.
Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the farms of Switzerland. They pulled carts, helped move cattle, and kept watch over their families. They weren’t dogs that wandered off to do their own thing. Their job was to stick close to their people, and that instinct runs deep. Bernese are known for being gentle and devoted, and they often pick a favorite person and stay glued to their side.
Poodles add a different layer. Underneath those fancy haircuts is a smart, people-focused working dog. Poodles were bred to work closely with hunters, so they’re tuned in to the people around them. They like to know what’s going on, and they love being part of the action.
Put those two together, and you get a dog that wants to be with you and also wants to know what you’re up to. That’s a pretty good recipe for a sweet little shadow.
They Feel Things Deeply
One thing that has humbled me over the years is just how sensitive these dogs are. Bernedoodles seem to pick up on our moods in a way that still surprises me. When someone in the house is having a hard day, I often notice a doodle quietly settling in close by.
I think part of their following comes from that emotional awareness. They’re checking in. They want to make sure you’re okay, and they feel safer knowing where you are. It’s less about being clingy and more about caring.
Of course, that sensitivity means they also do best with gentle, patient training. Harsh words tend to hurt their feelings more than you’d expect. A calm voice and lots of praise go a long way.
Loyalty Is Just Who They Are
Some dogs are happy to hang out in the backyard all afternoon. Most Bernedoodles would much rather be lying across your feet while you work. You don’t have to earn their loyalty over months. It often shows up within days of bringing them home.
Many of our families tell us their puppy picked a “person” early on. Sometimes it’s the one who feeds them, and sometimes it’s the one who sits on the floor and lets them chew on a shoelace. Either way, once that bond forms, it sticks.
The Bond Begins Early
I truly believe the way puppies are raised in those first weeks matters. At Morning Glory Doodles, we try to keep our puppies close to everyday family life: the sounds of the kitchen, gentle handling, and plenty of laps to curl up in. We’re far from perfect, but we do our best to help each puppy feel safe and loved before they head home.
I think early comfort helps them learn that people are good. By the time they meet their new family, they’re ready to attach.
A Gentle Word About Balance
As sweet as this trait is, Bernedoodles don’t love being alone for long stretches. If your days keep you away for many hours, plan ahead. Some ideas that tend to help:
- Practice short periods apart while they’re young, so being alone feels normal
- Give them a cozy space of their own, like a crate or bed with a favorite toy
- Keep goodbyes and hellos calm and low-key
- Offer daily walks and play to burn off energy and build confidence
A little independence training goes a long way toward a happy, well-adjusted dog.
Closing Thoughts
If your Bernedoodle follows you from room to room, please take it as the compliment it is. They aren’t just tagging along. They’re telling you, in the only way they know how, that you’re their whole world.
I feel very lucky to spend my days around these gentle, loving dogs, and even luckier to see them go home to families who love them back. Whether you’re thinking about a Bernedoodle, an Irishdoodle, or a Goldendoodle, I hope you find a companion who makes every ordinary moment feel a little less ordinary, even the trips to the laundry room.
Thank you for reading, and give your fluffy shadow a scratch behind the ears from all of us.
