F1 VS F1B Doodles

F1 or F1B? What’s the difference?

When looking for a Goldendoodle or a Goldendoodle breeder, you’ve probably come across references to F1, F1B, F2 and more, and you’ve probably wondered what all these letters and numbers mean! These terms refer to the doodle “generations” and ultimately describe how much Poodle your puppy will be.

Here at Morning Glory Doodles we breed F1 and F1B Goldendoodles, Irishdoodles, and Bichondoodles, and all of our dads are Poodles. The difference in each litter’s “generation” will depend upon the mama.

·         F1 means that the puppy will be 50% poodle and 50% of the other breed. For example, an F1 Goldendoodle has a Poodle dad and a Golden Retriever mom.  This is a first-generation doodle.  Likewise, an F1 Irishdoodle has a poodle dad and an Irish Setter mom.

·         F1B means that the puppy will be 75% Poodle and 25% the other breed. For example, an F1B Golden Doodle has a Poodle dad and an F1 Goldendoodle mom. When a doodle is bred with a poodle a second-generation doodle is produced.

Some clients have a strong preference for one generation over another.  Though each puppy is an individual, there are some general characteristics of the generations of Goldendoodles.  Since poodles are considered to be hypoallergenic and shed little or none, the more poodle that is in the mix the lower the chances for shedding and allergic reactions.  While some clients with pet allergies have no problems with their F1 doodle, an individual with extreme allergies would be better off opting for a pup with a higher amount of poodle in the mix (an F1B).

F1 Goldendoodles are likely to have a wavier coat, while F1B pups tend to be curlier.  Even within a litter, some pups will be curlier than others, both with F1 and F1B litters.  The curlier the coat, the more maintenance it may require, so for this reason some people prefer an F1.

Size may also be a factor in which type of doodle you choose.  An F1 Goldendoodle, being 50% Golden Retriever, will likely not be a small dog as Golden Retrievers themselves are usually 50 pounds and larger. If you are hoping for a mini or small doodle an F1B is likely the direction you will want to go.

As far as temperament is concerned, we see no difference in the temperament or trainability.
