Reasons for Growling and Nipping
Deep Breaths: Doodle Puppies Use Their Mouths a Lot!
First, let’s reframe how we see puppy nipping and growling. Bernedoodles, Goldendoodles, and Irishdoodles are especially mouthy as little ones. Puppies don’t have hands, so they explore their world with their mouths.
When your Doodle puppy was with littermates, playtime meant wrestling, nipping, and even playful growling. It’s how all puppies—including Bernedoodles, Goldendoodles, and Irishdoodles—learn boundaries and communication skills. When you bring your puppy home, they try out these same skills with you. That nip or growl is rarely “aggression”—it’s just a way of saying, “Let’s play!” or “I’m not sure about this.”
And the best part? Bernedoodles, Goldendoodles, and Irishdoodles are super smart, so with a little patience, you can teach them better ways to interact.
Common Causes of Doodle Puppy Nipping and Growling

Teething Troubles
All Doodle puppies go through teething. Between three and six months, they lose their baby teeth as new ones come in. This is itchy and uncomfortable, so they bite and chew anything they can. Your fingers or toes are just convenient chew toys when their gums feel sore!
Playfulness Exploding
Doodles are famously playful—those silly zoomies and “let’s wrestle” invitations are part of their charm. When your Bernedoodle, Goldendoodle, or Irishdoodle growls and nips at your pant leg, it’s usually their way of trying to get you to join in their games (they don’t know our skin isn’t as tough as a littermate’s fur!). It’s all very normal for this goofy, energetic trio.
Overstimulation and Tiredness
All puppies get grumpy and bitey when they’re tired or overstimulated, and Doodles—especially when young—can get the zoomies like nobody’s business. If your puppy suddenly turns into a whirling, nipping machine, odds are they need a nap. Just like babies and toddlers may misbehave and get grouchy when they are tired, the same is true for puppies. They need more sleep than you may realize-about 19-20 hours a day. They are more prone to misbehavior and grouchiness without that necessary sleep!
Fear or Uncertainty
Every Doodle has a sensitive side. Sometimes, especially in new situations, your puppy may growl if they’re scared, overwhelmed, or confused. This is most common if they feel cornered or unsure—think visits to the vet, meeting new dogs, or if you try to take away a valued toy. That growl is their way of saying, “I need some space right now” or “I’m scared and overwhelmed.” Remember, your new puppy has been taken away from all the people he or she has ever known, all of their littermates, as well as their home. Although puppies usually adapt well, please be patient as they adjust to an entirely new environment!

Redirect with Toys
Bernedoodles, Goldendoodles, and Irishdoodles love to chew! Keep lots of puppy-safe toys around. If your puppy goes after your hands, calmly offer a toy as a better choice. Cheer them on when they take it—Doodles love positive feedback.
Nap Times Are Essential
Doodle puppies (and their people!) do better with good rest. All these breeds, especially when little, need up to 20 hours of sleep a day. If your puppy is getting wild and bitey, it’s probably time for a nap in their crate or pen.
Teach Gentle Mouths
Littermates teach each other not to bite too hard. You can do the same. If your Doodle puppy bites your skin, let out a clear “Ouch!” and pause play for a moment. They’ll start learning that rough bites end the fun.
Step Away When Needed
Some Doodles interpret “Ouch!” as a fun squeak and get more excited. If this happens, step out of the room for a few seconds. This simple “time out” teaches your Bernedoodle, Goldendoodle, or Irishdoodle that nipping makes playtime stop.
