Who doesn’t LOVE the feeling of hitting the open road, windows down, with your best friend in the passenger seat? Of course, your best friend has four paws, a perpetually wagging tail, and a beautiful, fluffy coat. Traveling with your sweet pup can be wonderful for both you and them! Of course, they want to be with you 100% of the time! Also, who wants to leave that sweet face behind?
Traveling with a Goldendoodle, however, can feel a little daunting at first. These smart, energetic, and loving dogs thrive on routine, and a long trip can certainly shake things up. But I’m here to tell you that, with a little planning, bringing your furry family member along can be a joyful, stress-free experience for everyone. It’s all about preparation and keeping your Goldendoodle’s needs in mind.
This guide is filled with tips I’ve learned from my own travels with my Goldendoodle. We’ll cover everything from what to pack to how to make the journey as comfortable as possible for your beloved doodle.
Gearing Up: The Ultimate Goldendoodle Packing List
Just like us, our dogs need a travel bag. I’ve refined my packing list over many trips, and this is what I’ve found works best for my Goldendoodle puppy and now my adult doodle.
The Non-Negotiables
First, let’s talk about the absolute must-haves. These are the items you should double-check before you even start the car.
- Food and Water: Pack more of your Goldendoodle’s regular food than you think you’ll need. You never know if a delay will extend your trip. Bringing their own food prevents tummy troubles. Collapsible bowls are fantastic for travel; they’re lightweight and save space. Always have fresh water available.
- Medications and Records: If your dog takes any medication, pack it in a clearly labeled container. It’s also wise to have a copy of their vaccination records and your vet’s contact information, either in a physical folder or saved on your phone.
- Identification: Ensure your Goldendoodle’s collar has up-to-date ID tags with your name and phone number. A microchip is an invaluable backup.
Comfort and Entertainment
A comfortable Goldendoodle is a happy Goldendoodle. These items will help them feel secure and entertained, whether you’re on the road or at your destination.
- A Familiar Bed or Blanket: Bringing their bed or a favorite blanket from home provides a sense of security. The familiar scent can help your doodle settle down in a new environment, whether it’s a hotel room or a relative’s house.

- Grooming Supplies: That beautiful Goldendoodle coat needs care, even on vacation. A slicker brush is essential for preventing mats, especially after a swim or a romp through the woods. I also bring dog-safe wipes for quick cleanups.
Hitting the Road: Making the Journey Smooth
The car ride itself is often the most challenging part of the trip. The key is to make it a positive experience. With their intelligent and trainable nature, most Goldendoodles can become excellent travel companions.
A dog seatbelt or harness is a great option. This keeps your pup secure in the back seat. Letting a Goldendoodle roam free in the car is a safety risk for both of you.
Managing Energy and Anxiety
Goldendoodles are active dogs. Being cooped up in a car for hours can be tough, but most enjoy the ride and are content! Plan for breaks—at least every three to four hours. Find a safe rest stop or a park where they can stretch their legs, go to the bathroom, and have a good sniff around (this is for fully vaccinated, older dogs). Puppies need a safer environment with no other dogs around!
A long walk or a vigorous play session before you leave can also make a huge difference. A tired dog is more likely to settle down and nap during the ride. If your doodle gets anxious, speak to your vet about calming aids. There are many natural options that can help take the edge off without heavy sedation.

Finding a place to stay that welcomes a Goldendoodle is easier than ever, but it requires some research. Never assume a hotel or rental is pet-friendly.
- Call Ahead: Always call the hotel directly to confirm their pet policy. Ask about any size restrictions or extra fees. Some places have designated pet-friendly rooms, so be sure to book one.
- Rental Homes: Vacation rentals are often a great choice, as they can offer more space and a yard. Double-check the rules about pets before you book.
- Be a Good Guest: To ensure places stay pet-friendly, always be a considerate guest. Keep your Goldendoodle from barking excessively, never leave them unattended unless it’s permitted, and always clean up after them.
Adventures with Your Goldendoodle
The best part of traveling with your dog is making memories together. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, visiting a dog-friendly beach, or exploring a new city, your Goldendoodle will be thrilled to be by your side. Their adaptable and social personality makes them wonderful companions for all sorts of activities.
