Getting a new puppy is one of the most exciting times for your family! We want to help set you up for success and part of that success includes obedience training. Goldendoodles, Irishdoodles or Bernedoodles need guidance and training and are looking to you to provide it. Why is this so imperative? This blog will explore the answer to that question!
Why is it so important?
I don’t think it’s possible to overstate the importance of obedience training! Puppies need training in order to learn what behaviors are appropriate and which ones are not. They really don’t know! Responsible puppy parents will take the time to invest in teaching their puppies what to do and not do. Misbehavior will eventually frustrate puppy owners, and it would be unfair to let your puppy continue in behaviors that will eventually get them in trouble! Please plan on starting training right away! Obedience training will help manage and correct undesirable behaviors including chewing, nipping, barking, or jumping on people.
Socialization
Training also involves socialization. It’s so important to socialize your puppy in the early weeks. You do have to be cautious of their surroundings as they do not have their full immunity for 2-3 weeks after their last puppy vaccinations. Proper training also exposes puppies to various environments, people, other animals (if fully vaccinated, not other puppies) which is essential to their social development. Do not allow your puppy to be part of a “puppy class” with other pups until 2-3 weeks after their puppy vaccinations are completed.
Safety
Keeping your puppy safe is another important aspect of training. A puppy that is well trained is much more likely to respond to commands. This can potentially save their life in a dangerous situation, such as running into traffic.
Bonding
Spending time training your puppy will also strengthen the bond between you and your puppy creating a relationship based on trust. It is important for your puppy to see you as the leader and for them look to you to set the tone and the boundaries.
Mental Stimulation
Puppies not only need physical exercise, but equally important is their need for mental stimulation. Goldendoodles, Irishdoodles, and Bernedoodles are very intelligent and need to use their brains to avoid boredom which leads to misbehavior! Puppies and older dogs actually enjoy the learning process! Obedience training provides the mental exercise they need, helping to keep them engaged which will reduce boredom related behaviors.
A Solid Foundation
Early training sets the groundwork for success and and also for more advanced obedience training! Having a solid foundation will make it much easier to teach your puppy new skills and continue to reinforce the basics as they grow.
One of the most important things a new puppy owner can do is commit to investing time and effort into puppy training. You will never regret the investment into training. It will benefit both of you as it will help lead to a well adjusted, healthy and happy dog that you will enjoy!
