Doodles are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world because they are undeniably friendly, fun-loving, intelligent, active, hypoallergenic, and incredibly adorable, making them an excellent choice for families with allergies or children. But like any dog, our furry friends require regular grooming to stay healthy and happy. Goldendoodles, Irish Doodles, Bernese Doodles, no matter which Doodle is part of your family, one thing is certain: that fluffy, wavy, curly, or somewhere in between, low-shedding coat doesn’t brush itself. To help you keep your furry friend in top condition, here are some dog grooming tips to help your Doodle stay healthy.

Tip #1: Brushing

Brush every 2-3 days if your Doodle has a wavy coat, and if it’s very curly, try to be intentional with daily brushing. This doesn’t mean you have to spend long periods of time doing it; if you do it regularly, this is rule #1 for a healthy coat and skin. This will also help prevent painful knots, irritations, red patches, or the development of skin problems.

Tip #2: Essential Tools

Invest in essential tools to maintain a healthy coat, such as a metal comb and a firm slicker brush. These two will be your Doodle’s best allies at home.

Tip #3: Staying Dry

Try to keep your dog dry between baths. Doodles love to play in puddles and water in general, and who doesn’t like to have fun?! But the truth is that moisture contributes to more knotting and triggers multiple skin problems. But in our daily lives, there will be moments of a lot of fun and water, and if that happens, everything is fine. The important thing here is to know that we have the responsibility to dry them off.

Tip #4: Bathing

Bathe them every 2-4 weeks, depending on their environment. When it’s bath time, I recommend using a mild, tear-free, and safe shampoo for dogs. Products with hypoallergenic formulas, oatmeal, chamomile, lavender, and aloe usually work very well, especially for those with sensitive skin. Please—never use human shampoo; they have a different pH than we do. You can also use a conditioner to give your dog’s coat extra softness, hydration, and shine.

Tip #5: Special Attention Areas

Pay attention to certain areas, such as the eyes (check and clean them), as sometimes fur can irritate them, their teeth (it’s important to brush them at least once a week with a soft-bristled brush), their ears (it’s advisable to clean them with dog ear wipes and check for any signs of buildup or infection), and their nails (you should prevent them from growing too long to avoid discomfort and pain, which is why it’s important to take them to a professional groomer at least every 4 weeks).

Tip #6: Grooming Appointments

Don’t skip appointments with your groomer! Remember – It’s vital and recommended to keep your Doodle’s grooming appointments every 4-6 weeks so they feel happy, comfortable, healthy, and looking great!

Dogs truly are incredible companions and bring special joy to our lives. Happy Doodle grooming!

About Kathia Clark

It all starts with a passion! – And that’s how mine began… My name is Kathia Clark, I’m 34 years old, and I have 13 years of experience working with different types of animals, 10 of them in grooming. I was born in Nicaragua and grew up part of my life in Costa Rica with my parents and sister. Today, I’m a lucky wife and mom to two furry friends – Luna, our sweet old lady, is 12 years old, and Bree, the little baby of the house, is 10 months old. I’ve been passionate about and a lover of animals and plants since a very young age; I don’t remember my life without them. But there was one animal in particular that I loved, and that was dogs. The love and care I had for them went beyond what my mind and heart could comprehend.

I went to college and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness. I worked with companies in that field, which contributed to my professional and personal development and growth, adding experience and reinforcing my knowledge in veterinary medicine, agriculture, accounting, and business administration.

In 2015, I decided to resume my studies to specialize in dog and cat grooming. I’ve always had a great love and interest in animal care, which motivated me to take that step. This gave me greater clarity about the vision and purpose of what I truly loved to do and what I wanted to dedicate myself to.

In 2018, God gave me the opportunity and blessing to open my first business, “A Pet Store and Grooming Salon.” That’s how this new season and adventure of my life began. I believe that every story shared in this process has been a life lesson, and every moment has been a brick in the construction of who I am today, a journey that is still ongoing.

Two years ago, my husband and I moved to Tennessee with new dreams and a new story to begin. My husband was born in Tennessee, but before we moved, he and I served as missionaries in a community in Nicaragua. God used people on this mission who connected us to where I work today, “Morning Glory Doodles,” a place I love because from the very first moment, I knew it was God’s calling. Over the past two years, being part of this team has been incredibly meaningful for me, both personally and professionally, and I am grateful for it.

Learning new skills and having the opportunity to love, care for, clean, respect, and learn from every dog and person at MGD, watching them grow and helping them find loving families, fills my heart with joy. For me, this isn’t just a job; it’s part of my life. My heart whispered what was already evident many years ago: my love for dogs deserved its own space. Because when you follow the path of love, you always arrive at the right place
